Day-to-day expectations
Homework
Homework is due Tuesdays. The two main components of homework are the reading of a levelled home reading book and the weekly completion of the activities in their homework duotangs.
Lunches
Please send a filled reusable water bottle to school every day. We encourage healthy lunches and snacks that are litter-free (i.e. fruit, vegetables, healthy protein, healthy grain products in reusable containers). We ask the children to repack any food that they have not eaten so that it can be consumed at home. A further advantage to this is that parents can see exactly what their child has eaten every day and can discuss preferences with their children. Please remember that all food sent to school must be nut free: if in doubt, read the packaging carefully. Also, treats for sharing are not permitted in any HDSB schools.
Library
Your child will visit the library every Wednesday. Please help your child remember to return their book to school for or before library day so that he or she can enjoy a new book for the following week. This will avoid disappointment and tears. Grade 2 students love getting new books from the library! Please note that we instruct the children to keep their library books away from water at all times as “water is a book's worst enemy”.
Gym shoes and comfortable clothing
The children have gym on Mondays and will engage in Daily Physical Exercise on other days. Running shoes are mandatory for gym. Please send a pair of running shoes to school with your child: these will also double up as indoor shoes and should remain at school until they become too small and need to be replaced. On gym days, please ensure that girls are wearing shorts, skorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms for their comfort. Tied-back hair also sets the girls up for greater success in gym, as their vision is not obscured and they remain cooler. No dangling jewellery, please!

Curriculum and Assessment
We follow the Ontario Curriculum in all subjects. It can be perused here.
We use a wide variety of assessment strategies including observation, exit passes, tests, presentations, checklists and student conferences,
Report cards will reflect both achievement in learning skills and subject areas. There are six learning skills: below you will find our Grade 1 learning skills expectations: (make chart like this, each skill with a different colour)

Grade Two Learning Skills
Responsibility
I return my homework to school on time. I put up my hand and wait for my turn to speak. I follow classroom rules and the class promise. I walk respectfully in the halls. I respect the rules for my indoor/outdoor shoes, backpack and desktop everyday. I tidy up after myself (centers activities and lunch). Initiative
I try new tasks with a positive attitude. I share my ideas with others. I make good choices and smart guesses in class. I use my time wisely when I am finished my work. Collaboration
I include others in my groups and activities in class and on the playground. I show respect for others through my actions and words. In a group I share my ideas and materials in a kind way. I work together with others by taking turns, doing my share of the work, respecting others ideas to achieve a common outcome. |
Independent Work
I listen attentively and follow instructions. I stay on task until I am finished my work. I work well in centres (e.g., stay at my desk and work quietly). I attempt to do my best on my own. I make good choices when I am finished my work. Organization
I put supplies and materials where they belong. I keep my desk tidy. I take care of my work and belongings. I complete tasks within a given time. I have supplies ready for the work I need to do. Self-Regulation
When I get stuck, I ask for help. I use my inside voice when in the classroom. I chose good fit books. I self check after an activity. I know what I do well and what I need to do to learn better. I use classroom resources to help me with my work (e.g., word wall, success criteria, anchor charts). |
